Unit 4 Multi-Step Equations

1.

The Hanauma Bay gift shop orders a big box of 250 reusable metal water bottles. The shop pays a wholesale price of $6 for each bottle. During shipping, 14 of the bottles get completely crushed and cannot be sold. The shop sells all of the remaining undamaged bottles for $18 each.

2.

A rental shack down by the beach rents out a snorkel gear set (mask, snorkel, and fins) for $24 a day. On Tuesday, they rent out 85 sets. On Wednesday, a big tour bus arrives, and they rent out 42 more sets than they did on Tuesday.

3.

A group of marine biology students divides a section of the coral reef into 8 equal zones to count invasive algae patches. In each of the first 5 zones, they count exactly 46 patches. In each of the last 3 zones, they count exactly 62 patches.

4 (Part A).

A group of student volunteers goes snorkeling through Hanauma Bay to count different marine animals along the shallow reef.

Part A: They count 4 separate groups of Green Sea Turtles (Honu) with 6 turtles in each group. They also spot 14 Hawaiian Monk Seals resting on the rocks. What is the total number of turtles and seals the volunteers counted combined?

5 (Part B).

Next, the students look for the Humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa (the famous reef triggerfish). They spot exactly 3 times as many triggerfish as the combined number of turtles and seals they found in Step A. If these triggerfish are split up evenly among 6 different coral heads, how many triggerfish are swimming around each coral head?
