Unit 2 Area and Perimeter

Solve the Word Problems Below

1.

A rectangular ʻilima planting zone measures 18 meters by 12 meters.

  • Find the perimeter to determine how much fencing is needed.
  • Find the area to determine how many plants can be planted if each plant needs 1 square meter.

2.

A semicircular naupaka garden has a diameter of 20 meters.

  • Calculate the perimeter of the semicircle (include the straight edge).
  • Calculate the area of the semicircle. Use π ≈ 3.14.

3.

A healer wants a square garden for medicinal plants with a perimeter of 64 meters.

  • What is the side length of the garden?
  • What is the area?

4.

An irregular quadrilateral planting zone has side lengths of 10 m, 14 m, 9 m, and 13 m.

  • Find the perimeter.
  • Explain why you cannot find the area with only this information.
  • List one additional measurement that would allow you to calculate the area.

5. (Bonus Question)

Maui wants to know the area of his fishing net, so he can make an estimate as to how many fish he can catch. The net's perimeter is 12 ft. He knows that the length is 2 times the width. Find the area.
